What is Washi?
Washi is traditional Japanese paper made from natural plant fibers such as kozo, mitsumata, and gampi.
Unlike machine‑made Western paper, washi is known for its soft texture, organic irregularities, and exceptional durability.
For centuries, it has been used in calligraphy, ukiyoe printing, bookbinding, and many forms of traditional Japanese crafts.

Why we created these washi textures
In digital ukiyoe production and background compositing, the most important element is the subtle “breath of paper” that gives artwork depth and authenticity.
These washi textures create a natural paper base beneath your illustration, so any ukiyoe elements placed above them gain richness instead of looking like flat digital color fills.
To achieve this, each Japanese paper texture was scanned and processed at high resolution to preserve the irregular fibers of real kozo and mitsumata.
This ensures that your backgrounds retain the organic character of traditional Japanese paper, even in large‑format or commercial design work.
