Ukiyo-e and Us: A Little Introduction
Bringing Ukiyo-e closer to you.
Ukiyo-e is a traditional Japanese woodblock print style—cute, cool, bold, and full of creativity.
Most of these artworks were made during the Edo period (1603–1868).
Hokusai, Hiroshige, Utamaro…
These legendary artists shaped the world of Ukiyo-e, and we’re proud of them as Japanese.
But Ukiyo-e wasn’t created for kings or elites.
It was everyday art—something ordinary people enjoyed in their daily lives.
Actor portraits, calendars, children’s picture books…
Ukiyo-e was everywhere.
Take a look.
People smile, pose, and make playful gestures.
Even the monsters look adorable.
We believe Ukiyo-e should be enjoyed more casually, more freely, and with more fun.
There are so many wonderful works waiting to be discovered.
So—what will you create with our materials?
Sending big love from Japan.
Ukiyoe Stock exists thanks to the cultural materials preserved and made accessible by Japanese libraries, museums, and public institutions.
As a small way of giving back, we offer free, unlimited access to our paid resources for educational and public institutions in Japan.
This is our way of supporting the people who protect Japan’s artistic heritage—and of keeping Ukiyo-e connected to the world, just as it once was in everyday life.
